This program provides younger Scouts with necessary instruction so they learn the skills required to advance in rank towards First Class. There is a $25 program fee for the Pathfinder program. This fee includes the cost of the supplies for Leatherwork Merit Badge as well as a group trip to Buccaneer Bay at Weekie Wachee Water Park at the end of the week. The program takes most of the day, session 1-5 daily, but at the end of the week, each participant will have had the opportunity to complete: Swimming, First Aid, and Leatherworks merit badges, Firem'n Chit, Totin' Chip, Scout Skills instruction (progress towards First Class rank; below is a partial list of requirements) Note- Pathfinders will be going on an overnighter away from their troops and may want to bring a ground cloth. Tenderfoot Requirements to be worked on: 4a. Demonstrate how to whip and fuse the ends of a rope. 4b. Demonstrate that you know how to tie the following knots and tell what their uses are: two half hitches and the taut-line hitch. 5. Explain the rules of safe hiking, both on the highway and cross-country, during the day and at night. Explain what to do if you are lost. 6. Demonstrate how to display, raise, lower, and fold the American Flag. 7. Repeat from memory and explain in your own words the Scout Oath, Law, motto, and slogan. 8. Know your patrol name, give the patrol yell, and describe your patrol flag. 9. Explain why we use the buddy system in Scouting. 10a. Record your best in Push-ups, Pull-ups, etc. 11. Identify local poisonous plants; tell how to treat for exposure to them. 12a. Demonstrate the Heimlich maneuver and tell when it is used. 12b. Tenderfoot First Aid.
Second Class Requirements to be worked on: 1a. Demonstrate how a compass works and how to orient a map. Explain what map symbols mean. 1b. Using a compass and a map together, take a 5-mile hike. 2c. Demonstrate proper care, sharpening, and use of the knife, saw and ax and describe when they should be used. 2d. Use the tools listed to prepare a cooking fire. 2e. Discuss a cooking fire and light-weight stove, safety procedures of both. 6a. "Hurry" cases of stopped breathing, serious bleeding, and internal poisoning. 6c. Second class First Aid. 7a. Safe Swim precautions.
First Class Requirements to be worked on: 1. Day and night direction. 7a. Discuss when and when not to use lashing. 7b. Demonstrate hitches and lashings. 7c. Use lashing to make a useful camp gadget. 8a. Demonstrate trying the bowline and its uses. 8c. First Aid transportation 8d. Heart Attack sighs and CPR
