Health Lodge

The camp has an on-site health officer, trained in first aid and emergency response. The health officer provides routine medical treatment and handles minor medical problems. The camp has also contracted with a physician in town for more in-depth medical treatment, along with a hospital for emergency treatment.

Insurance

The West Central Florida Council carries supplemental accident insurance for all West Central Florida Council troops. This insurance is used only after personal or troop insurance has been utilized.

Out-of-council troops must provide a copy of their or their Council’s Health/Accident policy and bring claims forms to camp.

Fire Prevention

Troops are expected to follow the troop fireguard plan as set forth by the Boy Scouts of America. Each Troop will need to appoint a troop fire warden, who will review procedures with the troop.

In accordance with B.S.A. policy, all liquid and gas fuels are to be used, filled, and stored under adult supervision.  No liquid fuel may be left in the campsite.  The camp provides facilities to store fuels.  No fires or flames are allowed in tents.

Bicycles

The use of bicycles at Sand Hill has become quite popular. Due to the distance between campsites and some of the program areas, use of bicycles by Scouts and leaders is encouraged. Please note, however, that neither Sand Hill nor the staff will be responsible for damage to, or loss of, personal items like bicycles. It is a good idea to bring a bicycle lock.

Bicyclists should take special care in riding bikes in camp, as loose sand and ruts may cause injury unless proper safety procedures are followed.

All bicyclists must wear a helmet. Bicycles operated after dusk must be equipped with a mounted white light visible from 500 feet and a red rear lamp and reflector visible from 600 feet. These camp rules will be enforced.

When not in use, bikes should be parked neatly, using bike racks whenever available. Remember that a Scout is courteous, so be mindful of pedestrians, animals, and general camp appearance when using your bicycle in camp.

 

Please have your Scouts walk to the camp wide campfires, dining hall, and camp wide emergency gatherings instead of riding their bicycles.

Wildlife

Sand Hill is blessed with a wide variety of animals and other wild creatures. Our animals are important to camp and can be dangerous if cornered or threatened. Under no circumstances should anyone touch or disturb snakes or other animals.

Program Areas

All program areas, including the lake and climbing tower, are off-limits when closed.  Furthermore, no scout is permitted to swim in, wade, or cross any undesignated body of water on the property.
