The Don Henderson Shooting Sports Area is one of the finest shooting sports areas in America, consisting of rifle, shotgun, and archery ranges has been built and certified according to the Boy Scouts of America standards, and is one of the finest in the Southern Region. The camp furnishes 0.22 caliber rifles, 20-gauge shotguns, and archery equipment. Archery merit badge costs $5. Rifle Shooting merit badge costs $10. Shotgun Shooting merit badge costs $25.  We also have a Buckskin Games area, featuring tomahawks.

 

Open shoots are available at the rifle and shotgun ranges at 11:00am and 3:00pm. Currently, we can only offer air rifle shooting after 5:00 PM, and our ranges must shut down by 8:30 PM due to County Ordinance.  To participate on the ranges during open shoot time, Scouts must purchase tickets at the Trading Post.  A shooting sports ticket costs $1 and equals the following:

bullet One block of .22 rounds or equivalent in Air Rifle Rounds
bullet One quiver of arrows at the archery range
bullet Four shots on the shotgun range
bullet Five throws on the Buckskin Games range
bullet One shot of Black Powder

 

Scouts are allowed access on the ranges during open shoot time on a first-come, first-served basis.  Unused tickets may be redeemed at the Trading Post.

 

Sand Hill Scout Reservation supplies ammunition for all firearms; no outside ammunition is allowed.

 

Archery:  Teaches proper care and safety when using a bow and arrow.  Difficult to meet proficiency requirements. Cost $5 Difficulty: Hard.

 

Rifle Shooting:  Reviews proper safety measures when using rifles.  Proficiency requirements are not easy.  Difficulty: Moderate.  Extra costs: $10 for Merit Badge Class.

 

Shotgun Shooting:  Teaches proper handling and use of shotguns.  Proficiency requirements are not easy.  Difficulty: Hard.  Extra costs: $25 for Merit Badge Class.
